1
LA Quis mihi det te fratrem meum, sugentem ubera matris meæ, ut inveniam te foris, et deosculer te, et jam me nemo despiciat?
EN Who shall give you to me for my brother, sucking the breasts of my mother, that I may find you without, and kiss you, and now no man may despise me?
^1
2
LA Apprehendam te, et ducam in domum matris meæ: ibi me docebis, et dabo tibi poculum ex vino condito, et mustum malorum granatorum meorum.
EN I will take hold of you, and bring you into my mother’s house: there you shall teach me, and I will give you a cup of spiced wine and new wine of my pomegranates.
^2
3
LA Læva ejus sub capite meo, et dextera illius amplexabitur me.
EN His left hand under my head, and his right hand shall embrace me.
^3
4
LA Sponsus. Adjuro vos, filiæ Jerusalem, ne suscitetis, neque evigilare faciatis dilectam, donec ipsa velit.
EN I adjure you, O daughters of Jerusalem, that you stir not up, nor awake my love till she please.
^4
5
Sponsus. Sub arbore malo suscitavi te; ibi corrupta est mater tua, ibi violata est genitrix tua.
EN Who is this that comes up from the desert, flowing with delights, leaning upon her beloved? Under the apple tree I raised you up: there your mother was corrupted, there she was defloured that bore you.
^5
6
EN Put me as a seal upon your heart, as a seal upon your arm, for love is strong as death, jealousy as hard as hell, the lamps thereof are fire and flames.
^6
7
EN Many waters cannot quench charity, neither can the floods drown it: if a man should give all the substance of his house for love, he shall despise it as nothing.
^7
8
EN Our sister is little, and has no breasts. What shall we do to our sister in the day when she is to be spoken to?
^8
[!note]- Our sister is little, etc…
Mystically signifies the Jews, who are to be spoken to: that is, converted towards the end of the world: and then shall become a wall, that is, a part of the building, the church of Christ. Commentary on the Old Testament (1752)
9
EN If she be a wall: let us build upon it bulwarks of silver: if she be a door, let us join it together with boards of cedar.
^9
10
LA Sponsa. Ego murus, et ubera mea sicut turris, ex quo facta sum coram eo, quasi pacem reperiens.
EN I am a wall: and my breasts are as a tower since I have become in his presence as one finding peace.
^10
11
LA Chorus Fratrum. Vinea fuit pacifico in ea quæ habet populos: tradidit eam custodibus; vir affert pro fructu ejus mille argenteos.
EN The peaceable had a vineyard, in that which has people: he let out the same to keepers, every man brings for the fruit thereof a thousand pieces of silver.
^11
12
LA Sponsa. Vinea mea coram me est. Mille tui pacifici, et ducenti his qui custodiunt fructus ejus.
EN My vineyard is before me. A thousand are for you, the peaceable, and two hundred for them that keep the fruit thereof.
^12
13
LA Sponsus. Quæ habitas in hortis, amici auscultant; fac me audire vocem tuam.
EN You that dwell in the gardens, the friends hearken: make me hear your voice.
^13
14
LA Sponsa. Fuge, dilecte mi, et assimilare capreæ, hinnuloque cervorum super montes aromatum.
EN Flee away, O my beloved, and be like to the roe, and to the young hart upon the mountains of aromatical spices.
^14
[!note]- His left hand, etc…
Words of the church to Christ. His left hand, signifying the Old Testament, and his right hand, the New. Commentary on the Old Testament (1752)
[!note]- Who is this, etc…
The angels with admiration behold the Gentiles converted to the faith: coming up from the desert, that is, coming from heathenism and false worship: flowing with delights, that is, abounding with good works which are pleasing to God: leaning on her beloved, on the promise of Christ to his Church, that the gates of hell should not prevail against it; and supported by his grace conferred by the sacraments. Under the apple tree I raised thee up; that is, that Christ redeemed the Gentiles at the foot of the cross, where the synagogue of the Jews (the mother church) was corrupted by their denying him, and crucifying him. Commentary on the Old Testament (1752)
